Ok I just got a job. about to get my first paycheck and thinking about banks and building credit. I spoke to a friend about two banks chase and capital one. in the end he said capital one is better because they didnt give him odd charges like chase. Im not sure which bank to start with. Im afraid of going into debt...

First, see if you qualify to joint a credit union. As a general rule they are a much better option and don't try to rip you off at every turn.
Savings and checking accounts do not build credit ratings...only extensions of credit like loans and credit cards do.

I use Bank of America and have not had one problem of fee. They do the keep the change and automatically round your purchases up to the next dollar and put that in your savings account...it's great.... I usually end up with about $200 a month in my savings from the keep the change stuff... I've had my account with them for 7 yrs. I refuse to switch.... their wire transfer fees are kinda steep though... that's my only complaint.

Just shop around for the account terms that best meet your needs - look at the banks' websites. Don't confine your search to just those two "megabanks." Often, smaller banks offer better deals and service.
