How much does cord blood banking cost?

Share |

Neither myself nor my husband have any type of cancer in our families, however, I am considering banking our son's cord blood, just in case. In your opinion is it worth it? How much does it cost?

Here is a good report about cord blood banking - it shows the pros and con.

I like the page that I have it linked too - look halfway down, it talks about the genetic code of the blood. It's under the "downsides of banking cord blood". My doctor mentioned that part to me and I looked into it - it was my deciding factor not to.

Saving your baby's cord blood is so important. The stem cells are a perfect match for the baby and could also be a match for you, your husband, the baby's siblings, etc. Stem cells have been used to treat cerebral palsy, cancers, sickle cell anemia and 70+ diseases.

Costs vary widely. I bought a gift of cord blood banking for my step-daughter and did alot of research. I used CordBancUSA (cordbancusa.com) because they have the best technology and really good pricing. (Some of the older banking companies were so expensive!!!!) I also liked the people I talked with at CordBancUSA - they were very caring and knowledgeable.

Well it depends on where you live and what banks are around you. Here (in Ontario) it'd cost us approx $300 for the collection kit and about $120 per year for storage. Because of our universal health care it doesn't cost anything extra to have it collected (that is covered). Check with your doctor about those costs if you are in the US though.
In my opinion it's well worth it. We're saving up to make sure we are able to do this. (and we'll prepay for 5 years of storage). Whether it's worth it or not for you is a personal choice though. If you can afford it without any real hardships then I see no reason not to do it just in case. However, if you guys are financially strained, it's something to discuss and look into and see if the pros outweigh the cons.

Good luck

REALLY expensive... It's $150 a month to keep it in the bank, $300 start up fee, like 600-700 to get the kit and do the procedure...

I would have done it if it wasn't for the 150 monthly banking fee... that is outrageous.

TOO EXPENSIVE!!!
I think it was like $200 a month to store the blood and like $600 to extract the blood..
PLus like $300 to register?
