Give me one good reason why banks are closed on Sunday?

Why the hell are banks closed on a sunday? Every restaraunt I know stays open, stores are open, even the damn library is open. What, those people don't deserve a day of rest? Or maybe those people have a very specific work profile, they demand good pays and hours, so working on Sunday out of the question....

It all depends on the wage award people are working under.

On MY award (I work in processing and manufacturing) Saturday is Time and A Half. Sunday is Double Time, or Double Time and a Half. So if your friends are working on a similar award, if they worked Saturday they'd get $15 an hour (penalty rate) and if they worked Sunday, possibly $20 or $25 an hour. What employer is going to want to pay those kinds of wages? Are you kidding me?

Banks do have the traditional opening hours. But these days, they'd be paying insurance for being open on those days, (public indemnity, in case someone stabs themself to death with one of those pens because it wasn't chained to the table on a long enough chain, or in case they got robbed, as Sunday, with it's sparse shoppers and few employees would make it a soft target) and utilities. They might need a security guard also. I am sure being open on a Sunday is prohibitively expensive, mainly because of the wages. No boss is going to fork out all that extra money when customers can come in during the week or on Saturday morning.

It also might be what the union has negotiated for that industry. I know in my country if you're protected by a union agreement, you either get paid heaps more (the penalty rates) for weekend work, or you negotiate to not have those days as days of employment. If the union has negotiated that they will not work on a Sunday, and the workplace (whether the individual employee is a union member or not) has negotiated not to work that day, then they do not work that day.

Actually, I don't really like the idea of banks open on a Sunday. They'd have to raise fees to cover the cost of the wages and the insurance and running costs, and I'm not a huge fan of bank fees as it is. Be happy with what you've got. Not so long ago, I think most banks didn't even open on a Saturday.

Best wishes

Traditionally Sunday has been a day of rest, when famlies stay home together, go to church, and don't do much shopping and other activities. In keeping with that trend most banks closed their doors because there wasen't much demand for their services.

Nowadays many people stay home on Sundays but many people also go shopping eat, and do other things that require money.

Think about it though, banks don't make money by staying open, there not like another buisness that sell a product. Banks make their money by charging intrest on things like credit cards, loans, and mortgauges. So banks make money even when their closed. When there open banls need to pay their employees, run the security system, and use power in the buildings. The only reason banks are ever open is to keep the members happy so they take out loans and stuff.

So why would banks break tradition when it doesnt benefit them?

look i can remember when banks also closed on thursday afternoons and stay open from 9 - 3 the rest of the week -- back than it kept the work week close to 40 hours -- i can see in the future some banks being open 24/7!!!

More banks are opening on Sundays nowadays. It's just the competition.
