Why is the Outer Banks of NC referred to as the graveyard of the Atlantic? (scientific answer please!)?I can't figure it out. ! | |
The reason they call it that is because of how many ships have sunk during hurricanes off the coast of NC and SC. The Outer Banks have a lot of sand bars which the ships would get caught on and then the hurricane would destroy the ships. This name came about during the 1700's and 1800's.
Many severe storms in this area = many shipwrecks
