What would be a good stopping point om a trip from Ohio to Outer Banks?

My family and I are leaving next weekend from OH to the Outer Banks. I am wondering where a good stopping point would be about 8+ hours in that would also be a good spot for the kids to get out and run around a bit? Looking to spend the night too. Also, are there any must see scenic areas along the way?

You can make the journey via 1 of 2 different routes, I would suggest depending on which you choose, ether southeast West Virginia, or west-central Maryland.

Both would be a rough estimate of a Center marker for the trip there.
