We just got a check from Department Stores National Bank-Macy's? Fraud?

Share |

I was going through the bills and I saw that I received a Check of 20.98 from the Department Stores National Bank-Macy's. Apparently the DSNB exists, according to Macy's. The problem is, we don't have an account with them. We never opened a Visa Card with them. We've always paid cash when we shop at...

First, don't try to deposit or cash this check!

Next, follow up with Macy's to see if an account has been established under your name that could have generated the check. If there has been, and you didn't create this account, send a certified letter to Macy's enclosing the uncashed check if it was theirs (make a copy for your files!) together with an explanation disavowing responsibility for the account and cancelling the account.

Check your credit reports with the three credit rating agencies, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax to see if anyone has established credit under your name.
If so, place a hold and a 'fraud alert' on your credit file with these three companies until the matter is fully resolved.

Go with the flow

Take it to your bank.
Tellers live for this kind of stuff. You will get the manager look into it.

It could be that you had a credit balance on an old credit card for some reason.
Banks are continously changing names .
The account could have been over a year old - and they just sent you a check.
Check your reports at
Annual Credit Report.com

Also, what bank is the check written from.
On the face of the check.
You can go to that bank and cash the check - I suggest this the most.
That way it's not tied in any way to your checking.

Remember there are scams out there.
You deposit a small check - they get your account number - and they wipe out your checking account.

Call the Macys customer service number listed on their website and ask them. If they know nothing about this, then this is just a "test check" from a scammer. If you deposit it and it clears, then they will follow up with a larger check, then ask you to wire a portion to them
