Is there a way to find out if you have money in a bank you don't know about?

I had a bank account back when I was ten (I'm now 21) down in Winter Springs, FL and I am unsure as to what the name of the bank is. Is there a way to find out which bank you had an account with and if there is still money in it?

If it was that long ago, the bank would have had to close the acocunt and turn it over to the state's unclaimed funds division. They might have a web site to look up your name and instructions on how to claim any funds in your name. I don't think you get interest, since the states use that interest to run the program.

Contact Winter Springs City/Town Hall. They will be able to direct you to Florida's abandoned property division and you can check through your name there. They will also be your best resource of finding out what banks were in the area as of 11 years ago. Since there are so many bank mergers today, the bank holding your deposit may have changed names multiple times by now. The city/town hall would have the businesses of record and you could start from there. Call each of the banks in town and their customer service departments should be able to establish your identity via name/SSN. BUT this is all dependant on Florida's abandoned property laws. Here in Massachusetts, my bank has a 3-year limit of inactivity. If I don't touch my account for three years, they close it and turn it over to the state. Florida has some funky personal property laws, so there is a chance it may still be there!
