Is the plan to move the May bank holiday childish?

The May bank holiday may be one of the oldest traditional holidays on the calendar. A day when ancient ritual surfaces, as entertainment in towns and villages across the country. I'm thinking of all your Maypole and Morris dancing. Ye Olde England and her pagan past. Ok, so it's also associated with...

May Day was only made a basnk holiday in the UK by then PM Harold Wilson in the 1970's and had everything to do with international Labour Day. It was never about the traditional May Day celebrations.

Consider, we have New Year, Easter, Spring (end of May) and then nothing until the end of August, and then nothing until Christmas. The May Day holiday is superfluous. People would benefit more from a break between August and December so moving the 1st of May holiday is logical. What would be even better is an additional holiday! but given the economic climate I cannot see that happening.

May Day is a big festival in some parts of the country. We have the morris dancers dancing at Dawn at the sea front, welcoming in the May Day. We have the parade with Jack of the Green and a large event in the town. I would hate to see it go. In Rochester they have it as Sweeps Day - again, a massive event. Why should these die out due to government interfearance? This lot could not organise a piss up in a brewery!!

May day is a great day for all, everybody seems happy, its childish and ignorant to move it. But were having some nonces wedding forced on us as a public holiday, yeah great your highness so glad you're getting married don't mind all the people paid off or out of work. Brilliant those in work have to do twice the work to make up for the lost days production at least mayday was known about well in advance and companies could work around it.

I love May day, in the past I went to Padstow in Cornwall for traditional celebrations, these days we drive out to find a little village still partaking in maypole and morris dancing. Its my favourite time in the pagan calendar after Halloween and I would hate to lose it.

Childish in the extreme....next they will want to outlaw the word 'Labour' as nobody in this Country will have a job within 3 years with all these savage cuts....

It's a pity that the government can't spend their time (and our money) doing something useful !
The country is in too poor a state to be worrying about petty subjects, that don't really matter to anybody except themselves !

I wish they would stop messing about with things like this and get on with the real issues.

?

Why don't they just stop messing with things, they are worse than the kids

It's a particularly infantile and sickening example gesture politics. No wonder people can't be bothered to vote anymore. At least they're not proposing to call it Thatchers Day. I suppose that we can be thankful for that small act of mercy.

it is a childish political gesture, but it might move onto my birthday, St Georges day - but that day can also be good friday and easter monday, now and again.
