There are 8,195 banks operating in the United States with FDIC insurance (should cover just about all banks that operate out of a branch location). Of these, 1,200 are considered savings institutions (minor, technical difference). Some of these banks are owned by the same holding companies. An example is Wells Fargo Corporation, which owns four banks (Wells Fargo Bank, Wachovia Bank-Charlotte, Wachovia Bank-Las Vegas, Wachovia Bank-Houston).
I do not have a number of branch locations for all banks, but it should be over 100,000 locations.
