Wishing to close B of A bank account, new bank suggestions?

Share |

Hi There, I was wondering if the Yahoo community might have some suggestions. I'm trying to close all of Bank of America accounts (savings and checking). I don't have much money to begin with, and I really really can't afford to be forced to absorb their ridiculous $5 debit card costs coming...

Credit Union or Community Bank. They usually network so other credit union or community bank ATMs won't charge you to use them. It works like a regional bank. They are insured deposits also.

Just moved myself to a credit union, no credit check, free checking and debit card, no minimum balance requirement. They even gave me $5 free to my account for accepting paperless statements.

No bank is perfect, or wonderful, but TCF is a decent bank. You can get a free checking account, and they have a . . . wha's the word. . . program, for lack of a better one, that will give you $50 for opening a new account. (Sometimes it's $100 for a new account.) TCF doesn't do credit checks and all of that, and they didn't take bailout money. I mean they were forced to take bailout money, but they were one of the few banks that gave it back.

If you don't have a TCF Bank in your area, the next thing I would do is try a credit union. Or your smaller, local banks might be good as well.

You'll really need to check all banks' policies on things like overdraft fees. There are some banks that will will charge you a bounced check fee, even if the check doesn't bounce; i.e., you wrote the check on the 9th with a penny shy in the account, on the 10th you made a deposit. Even though the check didn't bounce, at the moment you wrote the check you didn't have enough in the bank, and they will charge you a fee.

Good luck.

Westamerica, Bank of the West, Umpqua are regional.

A credit union would be better than a bank.

There are small banks in every town. The smaller the bank the better chance of an account with no balance especially if you have a direct deposit every month.

If you dont use a debit card to buy something you wont be charged $5. There is no ATM charge.

if you have a large money in the bank you will not have to pay the $5 for debit
bank of america is losing 1 billion a year a lot of our problems are bernankee
not raising our bank interest would be good if he did there would be more jobs
bernankee is trying to close the banks anyway b.o.f is hurting $5 is a small dent
don't blame b.o.a

Paladin

try a credit union
