Why does Discover Card seem so much more competent than Discover Bank?

Share |

A lot of banks accept deposits of check images, which can be done via your cellphone or your PC and scanner. But Discover Bank limits it to your cellphone only. And tonight I got this message from them: We are unable to load your Discover Bank Account(s). Please contact Customer Service at 1-800-DISCOVER...

Discover Bank started out as the Greenwood Trust Company, a one branch operation in Greenwood, DE. Sears bought Greenwood Trust Comapny back in 1985 so it could launch the Discover Card. Since it was a one branch operation, it was cheap. And since it was located in Delaware, Discover Card could use Delaware credit card law.

A lot of things have changed since then. Discover went from being owned by Sears to Dean Witter to Morgan Stanley to finally being its own independent company. But the credit card is still the bread and butter. The bank is secondary to keep in the good graces of the the banking regulators. It is still a one branch operation with an office on Dupont Hwy. in Greenwood.

As for verifying your social security number, you might as well call and do it. They may not even let you close the account before you do.

give up on discover checking account,,, those bonuses never seem to be worth the trouble,,, i think you learned that
before closing the checking make sure you have another first for 1 full month. and make sure there is no activity to your old checking for 45 days,,, then close it.
also read online if there are any fees for closing an account. my bank charges $25 for closing over the phone and mailling me a check. also see if you had to keep the account open for a full 6 months (sometimes you have to pay back that bonus).
