Yes we are smug, but we are smug in a very polite way.
Actually the tax numbers are a bit misleading because USA has been financing their budgets through very high borrowing. We simply don't have the same debt as USA has.
It's easy to provide Universal Health Care, low crime rates, honest banks, Olympic Golds, diverse population, global respect, global peacekeeping and a strong economy when your neighbor to the South provides almost all of your national defense for over 60 years.
Lets talk about the Canadian health care
Few years back they flew a women too the U S to have her 8 kids they told us there was a bed shortage so that is why they flew a high risk
Short time back a English actress had a skiing accident they air-vac her over night to the U S They told us she was already died Ho really so why over night and with a doctor
They have a government minister that is coming to the U S to have his operation What well be this story ''we want to save the really good doctors for the people''?
The American hospitals just south of them are filled with Canucks ''ho we want to share the wealth with our friends,down south''
Are you adding in the costs of provincial taxes? Perhaps the national government does not need to tax as much and send money to the provinces when the provinces tax a lot more than states.

We are #1 in the world for a reason. There is a reason Canadians are coming to America to live, work, and medical treatment.
People want everything for free but nothing is really free. If universal health care is so great why is one of the Canadian leaders coming to America for a heart surgery. When asked by the press his only response was that it was his heart and his choice. I wonder where he'll go when we have the same crappy system as them.
The population of Canada is not diverse, unless you are talking about the French descendents in Quebec, and they want out.
I've never met a Canadian that is smug, but many Americans that think we are.
