Which towns/cities in upstate New York have city qualities filled with stores, shopping, banks, markets etc ?

I want to move upstate and I want to make sure I don't move anywhere too suburban. I currently live 20mins from NYC so you can understand why I would like to be near all these places. I'd also like a bus line near just in case. Any towns/cities come to mind ?

Banks in New Albany, IN

Many cities fit your description. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca, Albany, and Utica.

Not Rochester. "Downtown" Rochester has nothing to offer as a place to reside, although there are efforts underway to draw residents back to the city itself. However, there are no services, e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, etc. and the city itself is pretty dead, except for some of the entertainment centers. Most of it is not somewhere you'd want to hang around in.

Lots of nice suburbs and villages in the outlying areas, however. Canandaigua is a nice little town, for example.

20 Minutes from NYC is not really "Upstate." You people from NYC are too much. You think anything north of the Bronx is upstate.

Buffalo is your best bet

look into Albany, Syracuse and Rochester

hope you like cold and snow. winters are brutal in all these places, much worse than NYC
if you are looking someplace colder and snowier but not too far from NYC, then head to New England and try Boston
