Sometimes local or just smaller grocery stores will cash them.

You can go to a check cashing institution and they will cash it with identification for a fee.

A family member and yourself may be able to go to their bank and cash it with identification. Each bank is different about this type of thing. Most banks don't like it, but often cash them. Your friend or family member will be taking a risk if the check bounces. Also, the bank may place a hold on your family member's account in case the check doesn't clear they can withdrawal the money from the account.

Why wouldn't you have a bank account...get one!

Consider telling the issurer of the check your dilemma and that you need a money order or to have the money put on a Visa debit card.

Although I am not a fan of them, Walmart will cash checks for just a few dollars.
