I live in NJ as well. I have a checking account at WaMu as well as an online savings account with them. Their online savings interest rate is pretty good and you get free checks for life with the checking account.
I also have a checking account at Commerce Bank...they are all over and have pretty good service. I opened my Wamu account after commerce, so I only really have this as a back-up.
You should open a bank account with Wachovia, because they have great customer service.
Most large banks are very similar - same products, etc. Just look for which one has convenient branches, hours and ATM locations to choose the best one for you.
Have you considered a credit union? They are very similar to banks but tend to have better rates as they are non-profit. If you have any in your area that you could join, that may be the best option for you.
