I have stayed at many parts of the Outer Banks. They are all nice. Some are busier than others. I have stayed in Corolla, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Rodanthe, and Hatteras...and been to...but not stayed in Ocrakoke. Personally, I loved Hatteras the best. It is the farthest drive...but it really is beautiful. All are nice, though.
I live around an hour from the beach (20 minutes depending on the spot) and they have a lot of laws about taking care of the beach. There are parts you can't go on, parts you can't drive on and you can't litter on any of the beach without getting a huge fine. The whole beach is really clean and nice so staying along any part of the beach will be a nice experience. The only problem is the expense.
