Don't close any existing account until you know that your new bank has accepted your application. I would recommend the Alliance and Leicester for having a current account that pays interest on credit balances and convenience. You can use their branches or any post office to pay in and withdraw money.

Cahoot, an Internet bank owned by Abbey, also pays well on credit balances and money can only be paid in and withdrawn at the post office or by post.

Both these banks offer a debit card and chequebook, though getting them is not automatic.

I suggest that you also look at Moneysupermarket.com.

the GiroBank /Alliance & Leicester/Post office offer such accounts but finding a post office and queuing for hours makes this a no-go.

most banks (HSBC/Barclays/Lloyds TSB and Halifax for certain) offer basic accounts for people who want to pay in and take out cash and include a cash card/debit card. they also offer cheque books but as most places don't accept them now there not worth that much

I bank with HSBC and never had a loan and they don't bombard me with offers either, just let them know you don't want the offers when you sign up with them.

Love the idea of pensioner bouncers escorting each other to pay cash for things but banking is easy and no banks have gone bust since 1970! so your money is safer than under the mattress or teapot!

I don't trust or like banks/the banking system. I only use cash.
