It indicates the branch bank of the Federal Reserve that issued the note.
A is Boston
B is New York City
C is Philadelphia
D is Cleveland
E is Richmond
F is Atlanta
G is Chicago
H is St. Louis
I is Minneapolis
J is Kansas City
K is Dallas
L is San Francisco
All US banknotes are printed in either Washington DC or Fort Worth, Texas. The way to tell the difference is that there is a tiny "FW" next to the plate number in the lower right corner on notes printed in Fort Worth. Washington DC notes have no indicator mark.
