Look at INGDirect. They don't charge for overdraft, and automatically give you an overdraft line of credit (if you use it, they only charge interest -- and only while you're using it; and transactions get denied if you exceed that). If you can live with a bank without local presence, it's great. Or have a free checking account at a local bank to use only for deposits and branch services, but do all the other banking with INGDirect (bill pays, ATM & debit card transactions, etc.) -- transferring between the two is easy from the INGDirect's end.

(E-mail me if you want a referral for INGDirect to earn $25 account opening bonus.)

All banks are the same.
This overdraft stuff has made the banks 40 Billion last year - and they are only getting richer.
If people could just keep their checking account in the positive - hopefull thinking.

Go through a credit union.
Some of them judge whether a transaction should go through or not.
Some will not even let you take money out if there is nothing in your checking.
How refreshing.
If you are tired of fees - a credit union is the way to go.
But don't start overdrafting repetitively with them - they will kick you out.
Respect them.

Go to walmart and buy a program called Quicken Check register or personal finance.
It's by the printers for about $30 - no more overdraft fees if you keep track of what you are spending.
