Roanoke, Va. is a wonderful city for a get-away (I'm from near there). It's somewhat mountainous and has museums, theatres, and shopping. Mt. Airy, NC is just off I-77 (if you come back through the Raleigh-Durham area) and is the town Mayberry (from Andy Griffith Show) is based on. Williamsburg, Va. is also wonderful. It has ben restored to its Colonial Period grandeur and has many sights and shops.
There are many more places, but much depends on when your trip takes place.
