What are some good gas piston operated ARs that won't break the bank?

I know my fair share about guns in general just not a lot about different brands. Whos are good and whos arent and so n. I'm looking to purchase an AR for a couple reasons. I absolutely refuse to buy anything impingement operated. Don't trust it. Never have and never will. I'd prefer something in...

I prefer DI guns for a few reasons, but I wont argue your decision. Its personal preference.

Unfortunately, with many of the cheaper gas piston systems you tend to run into problems. One of the main being carrier tilt.

While I've never shot or owned a bushmaster in either DI or piston, I have read plenty of stories and reviews of them being very low grade guns. Your mileage may vary.

The top tier piston options available are
PWS mk series
HK 416s
LWRC

Good mid range piston guns are made by Ruger, Smith & Wesson, and Sig. The first run of guns were supposedly shaky, but I've heard quality control is getting a bit better.

Understand that just about all gas piston systems are propriety. That means that parts like the piston system itself, and some cases the whole bolt carrier group are individual to the specific company. This makes coming about parts a bit harder, so make sure whatever company you choose has a very good customer service background, and parts availability. My dad recently purchased a new BCG for his piston gun, and it cost him $380, because it was the only kind he could use in his gun.

Unfortunately I don't really have any ballpark prices to throw at you, mainly because most of the country is still settling down from the recent gun panic this year. Prices are going to vary hugely by region and availability. Your best bet is to check out all the stores in your area and shop around.

DI AR-15s have been running for about a half of a century.
