Norfolk, VA (ORF) is the closest commercial airport. From the airport to the bridge onto the outer banks is about 1:15 by car (~70 miles). Nags Head is about 85 miles from the airport and about 1:40 in drive time.

If you're looking for lower fares, you might also check out Newport News VA (PHF). Air Tran flies in there which might help keep things a bit lower than Norfolk. It's about an extra 35-40 minute drive.

Raleigh Durham (RDU) is about 210 miles from Nags Head (approx 4:15 drive time).

If you live in the Washington DC area, there is (or at least used to be) a small charter airline that had scheduled flights once a day from Manassas, VA to Manteo airport, which is about 10 miles from Nags Head. Don't know the cost or remember the company, but if I do, I'll come back and post it.

If you want to fly yourself onto the Outer Banks, there are several airports available:

KFFA - First Flight/Wright Brothers Memorial is walking distance from where the Wright Brothers flew in Kitty Hawk. The downside is that there is a 24 hour on the ground limitation.

KMQI - Manteo/Dare County Regional is a bit further down the island (actually off the outer banks, but on an inland island). It's about 10-15 minutes from Kitty Hawk. I've flown in here a couple of times and the staff is very friendly.

7NC2 - Pine Island. This is a private strip further north towards Corolla, but if you're flying in and having somebody drop you off, you might be able to arrange that. You won't be able to leave an aircraft there however. Call the manager, Bryan Cody or Sean Hammer at 252-202-3656.

There are a few others in the area (public fields) if you need any more info, lemme know. I fly along the Outer Banks pretty regularly.

The best international airport to fly into would be Norfolk, VA. From there you can drive to the OBX within a couple hours. less if you take the new Bypass road.

Probably best to fly into Raleigh.

that's the closest major airport. If you fly into a smaller--the price would probably triple if not worse.

*****yeah--I'd check the Norfolk prices--didn't think about that!

RDU is a few hours away
