So for $500 or less, you can get ANY of the common "tactical" .22s (in no particular order):
1) Ruger 10/22 Tactical .22 - AR styling.
2) Remington VTR 597 - AR styling
3) Mossberg Tactical .22 - AR styling
4) Colt M4 22 - AR styling
5) Smith and Wesson M&P-22 - AR styling
6) SIG 522 - 556 styling
7) GSG5 or H&K MP-22 - MP5 styling
8) GSG AK - AK47 styling
9) Puma makes several, the one I like the best is styled after an old grease gun style full auto.
All of these range from about $250 - $500. Personally, I don't really need the tactical styling. However, if I were going to go down that path the ones I would choose between would be the SIG522, the Smith and Wesson MP-22 and probably the Remington VTR 597. I like my Dad's 597 pretty well and I've shot the other two and they seem pretty solid and accurate.

How much is too much? Because you can get a 'tactical' .22 rifle for around $500. If your thinking more along the lines of an AR015 chambered in .22 those cost up to $900. Most .22 rifles you can get for not even $250.
i own a ruger 10/22 - $200
i have shot a marlin mod 60 - $170
both are awesome simi auto 22s that are cheap and will shoot all day. they both come in a lot of Models and you can find parts for the both of them all over the place. other than that i would recamend a savage or remington.
Look up the mossberg tactical .22. Its $276 but for the looks and qaulity you get with mossberg its a great deal. Now remember that the price i put is msrp. Your dealer will have added dros fees plus sales tax. I want to get one myself but first on my list is a shotgun. Thats howni stumbled upon this little beauty =P
