If you're in the military, have you tried on base?? Some bases cash personal checks, and some places (the exchanges for example) will sometimes allow you to write a check for "over" the amount of purchase, so you can get cash back.

Worst case, go to the Navy Relief (or is called Family Service Center now?) and see if there's something they can do to help you in the mean time.

Also, being military, I'd recommend getting an account with NFCU, which is worldwide.

Ugh my local bank "oops we must have not sent the card out by mistake" and I had to wait 8 weeks for a stupid debit card.
Your best bet would be to write the check to someone you can trust and have them cash it and fork over the cash. Most places now will not cash personal checks- if any! The only other option you have would be to buy something and write the check for extra - but most places have a $25-50 max cash back with checks.

What you should do is open an account at a bank where you moved, and you can write a check off of your old bank to open that account. Then, when it's processed you can get cash out! It would take up to 3 days. good luck
