Many cities have water mains that are over 100 years old. So yeah, we need major infrastructure maintenance and replacement. We insist on a first-world standard of living, but use equipment and infrastructure designed for America when it was a mostly agricultural country in the 19th century.

There is already money available both at the federal and state levels for infrastructure projects.
Not to mention most states take a portion of the tax money that is collected for infrastructure projects and funnel it to other projects.
In my state 30% of the state tax money collected for roads and bridges goes there.
The rest goes to schools and also to social projects.
The bridge did not collapse because it was not maintained but because a truck driver tried to carry a load that would not fit through the bridge.
The tax payers will not be paying for a new bridge but the trucking companies insurance sure will.
