First of all dont put the Bully Dog junk (programmer anyways) on your truck. Its way more expensive and there are others out there just as good for better price. Try a TS chip or try a TS chip from Tony Wildman. . His tunes are custom setted to what all has been done to your truck.

The stock torque converter will not hold up to extreme driving conditions of settings over 100hp...street driving. When towing....use the STOCK setting. The 7.3 stock engine puts out 525 lbs/ft of torque and the stock torque converter is rated for 700. The chip can push you over that limit very easily. Don't worry too much about the tranny as the tc will go out before the transmission in most cases. As long as you keep the setting around 75 (Economy) you will get good throttle repsonse, speed, and mpg+ that you want. If you're wanting to push your truck harder than this though,I would suggest a billet torque converter. I just had mine installed as mine went out about 3 months ago after pulling a 10k 5th wheel using my 50hp tow setting. Make sure you have gauges when installing a chip. If you're not careful you can melt your pistons, which melt at 1250*. Any other questions, send me a message...be glad to help.

...as stated here....525 lb/ft. This is just a base line I use...but it depends on the year model, size tires, gear ratio, etc. Regardless of what the numbers are or are not, a chip can cause your tc to go out when put under the conditions I listed above.

A 4/6 bank chip does not monitor anything. Thats why when you buy a chip, you buy gauges .If you tell the chip to put out an additional 140hp and whatever the torque rating is for that...its going to put out 140hp and the torque that comes with it. The chip doesnt say "Oh well hes added an ATS transmssion and TC, so hes capable of handling this" or "No, this dude only has a stock tc, so I'm only going to do a 100hp". The best thing you could do would to be to dyno your truck to see if your drivetrain is rated to handle what the truck is putting out. The only time you would not buy gauges is if you buy a programmer with a digital display of the readings from the temp and boost probes. Go to a diesel forum and ask them. You will find out more from there than you will here.

Also for the exhaust, unless you live on roads that regularly salted during the winter months...you dont need the highest name brand there is out there. Any 4-5" exhaust will disapte just as much heat as the other. So if you live down south, an aluminum exhaust would be fine. If you live up north, go stainless. Just make sure the exhaust is mandrel bent for a smooth flow. A 5" exhaust is no more efficient than the 4", its just louder.

P.S.- The tranny and tc come BEFORE the wheels : )

The Bully Dog or any other performance tuner chip for that mater allows the engine to put out higher HP and Torque. Ford's TorqueShift transmissions are very well built, but in the long run if you are constantly in extreme performance mode at full throttle you could expect some future transmission problems. But, if you just want that extra power occasionally or when really needed than you should be fine. Remember, it is very important to install a performance exhaust if you are going to chip your truck. It helps the engine breath and run much easier.
To have some fun take a straw and place it in your mouth and blow through it as hard as you can. Then take two straws and place it in your mouth and blow as hard as you can. You will be able to blow out a lot more air much easier with the two straws. This is the same for an engine with a stock exhaust and an engine with a dual or larger diameter unrestricted exhaust. Good luck and have fun. If you have any questions please email me, i'd love to help:

By the way the stock 7.3 does not put out over 500 lb.-ft. like the guy below says. Its in the 400s at the rear wheels. And Banks makes the safest performance parts for any vehicle. It monitors the truck and will take measures to protect your engine and transmission unlike other tuners and performance parts.
