I went to Duck last year in August.
On the weekends it was very crowded and it took forever to get over the bridge to the island. The beaches were also very crowded on the weekend. This is probably because the locals from the mainland NC come to the OBX.
But during the weekdays it wasn't too crowded at all. You're not bumping shoulders in the ocean with people or anything. There is also plenty of room to set up your spot. Since it's not too crowded on weekdays you'll be able to have a great time in the water without other tourists bothering you.
The beach is also very nice, the water is a dark blue and the waves aren't too big nor too small. The water temperature can change drastically over night and sometimes the jelly fish wash up ashore. When I went they weren't that big of a problem. And the water was a perfect refreshing temperature.
