Myrtle Beach is more touristy - resort hotels, golf courses, shopping centers, live theater

The Outer Banks are a lot more natural. Developed areas are a lot lower density. There's historic things like Kitty Hawk and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; lots of parks.

Personally, I don't like things that are just overly touristy, so I'd much rather go to the Outer Banks.

I'd recommend going to the Outer Banks, it really has it all. Some of the islands have a relaxed, away from it all feeling to them. Others are pretty packed in the summer, and feel pretty touristy. There's a ton of stuff to do there, when I went I tried hang gliding and sand boarding in Jockey's Ridge State Park. The surf is awesome along the Hatteras national shoreline if you're into surfing - has some great smaller swells to catch. Parasailing in Pamlico sound is really awesome too. There is a lot of touristy stuff on the islands, but if your goal is to really get away from it all, the drive down to Hatteras gets pretty remote. Sometimes it feels like you're on your own deserted island, and the beaches are never crowded down there. If you take a 40 min or so ferry ride from Hatteras to Ocracoke, you'll really experience a true island village. The touristy stuff is limited - no big hotels, all b&b's and rental houses. There are some picturesque lighthouses and lots of history to the islands. The Wright Brothers memorial is in Kitty Hawk and there are quite a few shipwrecks to be explored if you're adventurous enough to scuba dive to find them.
