Well, I was born and raised in NC. On a farm in eastern NC. When my mother remarried, we moved to a different place in the Carolinas every year. I have lived in Charlotte for 30 years. I think that North Carolinian's are some of the nicest people I have ever met. However, when I lived in Lake Norman, there was an ABC store and a Hardees, and everyone was very down to earth (about 15 years ago). Now that transplants have moved in with their Mercedes and million dollar homes, the atmosphere has changed to more of an "Us and Them" mentality. Example: A man was on the the news the other day complaining that he moved here from Florida to get away from traffic, now that he is here he wants officials to stop development because too many people are moving in his neighborhood. So, to some extent there will be a little of that between locals and newbies. So much of NC has been rural (even in the city). Everything moves very slowly. In some parts of NC they are just now stepping into the 1980's. My grandparents just discovered cable TV, so natives are going to be a little suspicious of "town folk" and feel a little uncomfortable. If they can't relate to you, then they don't associate with you. It is nothing personal. For the most part you will love NC and the people in it. It is a lot like anywhere else. People can be very insulated against anything or anyone new until they get to know you a little better. I love this state and I hope you will too. Welcome to NC.
