Ok so heres the thing.... I never like using that 1-800 number because they are exactly current... The problem is when ever you use your card as "Credit" meaning anytime you dont use the Pin... so for example when your buying Gas and you just enter in your zip code or you sign for something it takes extra days for those transactions to come up... matter of fact the bank isnt even able to see them for a couple of days. The best thing in my experience to tell you to do is keep a transaction register... this way you write your beginning balance and all the transactions done after that... for example if you have 100.00 in your account than you buy gas for 22.50 than you'll know to take away the 22.50 from the 100.00 and so on. So technically (and as awful as this is) there is no recourse you can have against the bank to prove what the automated system said.

Next about the Unauthorized charges; you can dispute them and they should refund all the charges caused from that. Also if you talk to a banker they may be able to return some of the other fees for you as a curtosy.

There are a lot of banks with free checking... so just look around and see which sounds the best for you!

Have you tried disputing the charge to the account that you said was unauthorized? If it is fraud you should be able to get your money back for that charge and any fees caused. If you gave that company your acct/card info, the bank probably can't get your money back but you can request that they waive some of the fees due to the amount of time you have had your account and no previous overdrafts. The reason for 7 fees is because it is usually charged per item that posts to a negative balance and most banks will not be able to alert each customer whose account is going to be overdrawn because it happens quite frequently.

Well if you didn't authorize the charges that made you go negative to begin with you need to let them know that and they should be willing to credit most if not all the fees. Also even though you want free checking that doesn't mean you wont be charged overdraft fees if you account go into the negative. Also why didn't you just look online to see what you avail. balance was you would have been able to see those charges and known exactly how much was there.

If this is the first time this has ever happen to you, then you can go into the branch and tell them that you would like your overdraft fees reverse. Once I had five and they did three for me at the branch and then they told me to call the 800 number and they credited my account half of the $35 charge for the remainder.

Well, "free checking" won't stop overdraft fees. You need some basic training about checking accounts.
