to choose a bank, try to find a bank that gives you stuff that other banks won't give you:

1. no atm fee. most banks will charge you to use another bank's atm so find a bank that won't charge you.
;
2. free checking. find a bank that won't charge you a monthly fee if you maintain a reason balance (like 1000 rather than 5000 or 10,000).

3. no check limit. some banks only allows you to write x checks a month, and if you write more, you get charge a fee. find a bank that lets you write unlimited check. this is probably not a big deal since most people do online checking, so no check writing.

4. if you're opening a savings account, find a bank that gives you a high interest rate.

5. convenience. if two banks offer the same deal, choose a bank that's closer to you, making it more convenient if you want to dispute a charge or to order more checks.

Well, I recommend a national chain (US Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc.) in case you move out of your region--I had my bank account at a local credit union and had to get a new one when I moved away! But really, it doesn't matter a lot. Interest rates are all about the same. Just look up ones near your home on the internet and see if any of them have features that you have to have. But honestly--they're all pretty much similar.
