How old is this 10 shilling UK bank note?

Share |

My son just bought a 10 shilling bank note at an antiques fair for £1. The signature of the chief cashier is J.K. O'Brien. The series number is A91 or L, then a further 6 digits. All I could find through the internet is approximately 1960's but nothing on the A series, just b (£5 notes only) and C, 1963. Any ideas,...

According to the Standard Catalog of World Banknotes, Modern Issues, 13th Edition (2008), your note is catalog number P-373a (if it is the brown 10/ note with the portrait of the Queen. I think there was an earlier one that just had Brittania and the denomination on it, catalog number P-368c). The brown 10/ note with the L. K. O'Brien signature was issued from 1960 - 1961. The earlier 10/ note with the O'Brien signature was issued from 1955 - 1960. Both list for about US$1.75 in heavily used condition up to US$15 in as-new condition.

Here is a listing of all 10/ notes presently for sale on eBay:

?

J.K. O'Brien served from 1955 - 1962

the series number is of very little interest - these notes were issued in their millions and all will depend upon its quality to determine its value
( fine used, very fine, used etc)

each note had its own number - so yours A91 poss likely nearer to 1955 than 1960's

The series number does make a difference. The early series will make more money than the newer series. Most dealers will say that the series number don't matter then offer you a price for them. The condition always makes a difference,
