How long does it take for PayPal to refund money to a bank account?

A few days ago, I won an item (a rare antique) on Ebay and paid for it immediately. Later in the day, the seller asked for the payment to be canceled because he needed to add extra insurance costs into the item. I said that I would happily pay for the insurance costs, but he wanted to cancel the payment and start...

This guy is a crook and you need to report him to Ebay. My guess he is unhappy with the final sale price and didn't want to sell it to you OR worse, he took your money and will do it again to the next person. This is fraud either way--report him QUICKLY to Ebay. They can freeze his account while they investigate. Also, wanting to cancel payment and redo the invoice is shady, when he could have just added onto it.

I thought Paypal refunds were instant. You can actually call Paypal and talk to them (I have done this before). Hurry and good luck!

I bought a £3000 wooden garage on Ebay and when I checked with the seller it was different from the description. I cancelled the order, and the money didn t turn up in my account - the seller said it had gone out of his account and washed his hands of it, my bank said they couldn t help, and I had the greatest difficulty in getting through to Paypal, who it seemed were holding the money and handling the transaction, despite the fact I don t have a Paypal account. Although it now seems at least the money is somewhere, Paypal say it will be another 5-7 working days before I will get it - or two weeks after the cancellation.

Oh no!!

Definitely contact ebay AND PayPal immediately. A seller can refund all or part of a payment instantly if they choose to do so. I don't know if a large amount of money would make a difference.

I bought a Dooney & Burke handbag on ebay. The listing said "lot of three" so I thought there were three. I opened the box which contained a handbag, coin purse and dust bag. I contacted the seller. She said there were 3 items. I informed her that the word "lot" implied 3 of the same item. I threw out some legal sounding mumbo jumbo about consumer fraud and violating interstate commerce laws because the item crossed state line. I might've even said I was a lawyer. lol I received a refund of 2/3's of the cost within 30 minutes.

It's extremely easy as a seller to refund money. You pull up the transaction history, go to details, click on refund and put in the amount.

Paypal then transfers the money to your account (or back to your credit card if you paid with one). You would see the entry on your account instantly.

Note, the money does NOT go all the way back to your bank account. You, personally, have to sign on to paypal and manually withdraw the funds. (Then allow 3-5 days for it to get to your bank account.)

As for the item being relisted...yeah, that does look odd. Some Chinese sellers have dozens of identical "antiques" (and this is visible if you do some research on their sales history).

Alas, you may be dealing with someone who has no intention of honoring the sale...a seller cannot unilaterally cancel the auction because they think they'd get a higher price by auctioning it again.

I don't know the answer to your specific question, but intuitively, it doesn't feel right. I would contact Ebay as soon as possible and review what steps are necessary. If you do not get any resolution from them, call your attorney.

I wish you luck!
