If you're unsure, why cant you ask him to go to the bank and get a cashiers check and deliver to you. Or cash itself
Most banks will not verify funds over the phone. If there is a wachovia bank in Cali I'd go there and cash it, or get it converted to an official check so you know that it's good. Checks typically do not take more than 3 business days to clear, but yours may take longer because your banks are located in different Federal Reserve Districts. You should give it 5 business days to be on the safe side. If the check is fraudulent, then wachovia should return it without being paid. Some questions you should ask yourself are: Why is this guy traveling so far to get a motorcycle? Is it a classic, or an amazing deal? Is it a hard-to-find bike? If it does not make sense to you, definitely give the check plenty of time to clear. Here is the phone number for general customer service at Wachovia : 800-922-4684. Once you deposit the check, give it 3 business days and then call that number and ask to verify if the check has cleared their account. Banks are more likely to verify this than if you call up and ask how much money is in the account. If they'll verify for you, then release the bike. Deposit it. He sounds OK, saying he'll wait until the check clears before he gets the bike. Depending on his account (and yours) it could take up to ten days.
Also, the total will not post to your account until cleared, so don't plan on writing any checks against it until then.
Call the bank and give them the check information. If they say it is good then ask them the question you asked us.
