Changing careers is not always easy and sometimes we have to take a step backwards or sideways to move ahead. Working at a career you like is always more rewarding than making money at one you hate. As you know right now the mortgage industry is struggling and is not forecast to return to robust for several years. This may be good timing for you. If there is schooling and credentials you need you can attend school while working your shipping job. While earning your credentials work hard at networking with your professors and other in the industry. The key to getting established in a career field is networking. If you are interested in being a consultant you may want to start a website that offers advice in your area of interest. It takes time but you can build a following and gain industry recognition. Once you have your credentials you can either start your own consulting firm or perhaps you can buy into one that is up and running. At this stage there are several established consulting firms that are going bust, and you could by in at a bargain price. There is a risk and timing is everything to catch the up swing. I have a discussion topic on my website practicalmentor.com on changing careers, and information on a book a colleague wrote that you may find helpful. Good luck The PracticaL Mentor
