From Arles towards the sea the Rhône splits up into several branches forming a vast delta with lakes. The region is called the Camargue. It is a protected wild reserve, partly marshy, home to a large variety of wild birds (including pink flamingos), wild flora and fauna, where black bulls and white horses are bred and supervised by 'Gardians' (France's equivalent to Cowboys) and where rice is grown. It is very beautiful and worth the visit.
The walled city of Saintes-Maries- de-la- mer, by the sea is a place of annual pilgrimages for French and European gypsies, and yes it can be reached by car.
