Directions from the Outer Banks in North Carolina to Northern VA via Route 17?

I am looking to avoid traffic this Saturday by avoiding route 95 north. I am told there is a better way using route 17 through Fredricksburg?

We drove 17 this past weekend and I'd rather look at farms and such and go 35-55 than look at the back of a cars the whole way home. It was a pleasant drive but keep your eye on the speed because there were lots of cops.

17 is the "old" highway. Although the farthest I've been north on 17 is the Outer Banks, if any of the rest of the road is an indication it is 2 to 4 lane road that runs through every town on the map. Speed limits will range from 30 to 55 with stoplights constantly. I have driven Savannah to Outer banks many times. You may be able to avoid most of the traffic but you will probably get there in the same time as if you sat on 95.

I don't know where you're going, but maybe find your way to Raleigh and take 40W to Greensboro then 29N?

I've driven US 17 from end to end in VA and other than the urban areas - US 17 tends to have a 35-55 MPH speed limit along the route. I use this rather than I-95 when going to VA Beach and points south. You could make almost the same time as on I-95 without the delays and traffic.
