Normally you should prune any rose in the winter when they are dormant to keep them in a manageable size. Also if you are going to transplant that should be done in the winter also. I am going to contact two friends who are the president and v.p. of our local rose society. They are Certified Rosarians with the Am.Rose Society and are very knowageable on roses. Yahoo has you located in Tennessee is that correct? Can we contact you by e-mail if needed? I will get back to you- George Nash
EDIT-My prelminary info is that it can be pruned back and transplanted but it will have to be done after this rose has finished its spring bloom. I will have further info later. By the way in order to e-mail you will have to give me your e-maill address or change your personal preferences on Yahoo.

don't.... this plant will not transplant well...cut it back hard if you must and it will grow back just fine....

this one got blown backwards off the arbor a few years back and had to be cut down to stubs for all the breakage to be removed.....

be aware that most places that talk about transplanting these roses, they are talking about roses that were planted 'recently'..... there's no way I'd dare try to move mine.... yours has been in for ten years?... mine for 15.... the roots ... there's no way to move something that is dug in that deep.... but if you still intend to, just remember to not fertilize it at all until it blooms again.....and if it takes years for it to revive, so be it.... but I'd not take that chance..... best of luck to you....
