Can I open a bank account without ID? (I'm over 18)?

Share |

Due to complications, I have to renew my ID by first getting a Certificate of Citizenship, which could take a very long time. Can I open a bank account online or in person if all I have is my social security number?

If not, do I have to just wait until I have a valid State ID?

Thanks!

As a rule, no. Your ID is needed to verify your identity.Nevertheless, since there are other ways to verify if you gave them your real name, a bank may let you open an account. But here' the catch, your transactions will be limited to cash, no check deposits, no fund transfers. This means whatever money you will withdraw from the bank will be confined to the amount you deposited as cash. This eliminates the risk of letting you withdraw from something that cannot be verified as truly belonging to you.

I think that you should contact the local bank in which you want to open an account
it varies from bank to bank internal policies
because banks have online verification systems through they can check out your id card status
just contact them
