I have an account here in Japan with Mizuho Bank and I need to transfer money back to America. What is the best way to do this? The Mizuho website is only in Japanese (they have an English version but it's not the same site, most of the information is missing) so I can't find out how to do transfers from...

Try GoLloyds.

It has a fix charge of 2,000 yen per transaction. Your Japanese bank will charge 105 yen and your bank in america will charge 15 - 20 dollars. But it's an electronic transfer so it can all take place in one day.

Before you can transfer you have fill out a form with both banks' details on. After that you visit your nearest ATM and do it from there. Say to the Japanese bank staff "fumikomi" and they'll know what you're trying to do; and half do it for you.

Please put my name (Keith Buxton) in the "person who introduced you" and I get a free transfer later :)

OR

Get an extra card (international type - with the metallic strip) saying "it's for a family member" then get it to your parents somehow. Then they can take money out for you whenever you ask them.

The Yen is a fairly stable currency compared with the US Dollar.
Are you sure you want to convert your Yen to USD?

The cost of a wire transfer will be generated by the receiving bank. I suggest requesting a one-time waver of that charge.

As to the particulars, try plugging the Japanese language website into here: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/
It's actually pretty good for what it is...

lolit
