and down the outer banks to Cape Hatteras which isn't a separate island
Drive or fly and rent a car when you're down there. It's like a 10 hour ride depending on which end you're going to. Your only choices in driving are 95 or us-13 (which really dips in and out of US-1). If you drive, plan on finding a place to stay overnight. I highly recommend you aim to go over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as it's just turning to sunset - it's totally awesome.
