Banking in Canada and Buffalo, NY?

Share |

What banks are there in Ontario, Canada that they would also have across the border in Buffalo, NY? I'm looking into moving to Buffalo, then eventually to Toronto for school. Wanted to know if there is a way to use a debit and/credit card in both countries with one bank...?

TD Bank does have branches in the eastern US, but none in or near Buffalo. My relatives from the US use HSBC, and they are able to withdraw cash at Canadian ATMs. That might be your best option.

You can use US debit cards in Canada but you will generally pay a fee to do so. Most of the big banks in Canada are on either the Plus or Cirrus network, so check with your US bank to see which one it uses.

Canadian debit and credit cards work fine in the US. However, you'll get charged fairly heavily on both exchange rates and fees for using an ATM other than your bank. You may also need to inform your bank or credit card company that you will be in the US for some time, such that they don't consider long-term usage outside the country as suspicious activity. Several Canadian banks will have branches in major US cities -- BMO, ScotiaBank, TD, etc. all have US branches. These tend to focus mainly on business customers and tourists, but they are fine for simple deposits and such. Most have online software so this is fairly easy. If you are only in the US temporarily, it may be fine. They can also setup US fund accounts such that you won't have exchange issues.

BTW. You need proof of legal residency to open accounts in the US. If you aren't a US citizen, you can't just live in the US.

Talk with a financial planner at your bank and they'll give you advice.

I don't think you'll find any. It doesn't matter, however, because you can use your ATM card from a Canadian bank in the US, and vice versa. When you become a legal resident of Canada, you may open a Canadian bank account and have money transferred from your US bank.

TD bank has US locations, but it isn't clear from the website if they are actual branches or just ATM locations, and in any case there are none in Buffalo or even close to it.

There isn't one. Canadian banks and American banks are not the same. When you live in the US, you bank with a US bank. When you live in Canada, you bank with a Canadian bank.

Yes, HSBC.
