Accessing bank account with power of attorney?

Share |

So, my husband has left for a deployment and he left me as his power of attorney. We didn't have much time to arrange everything. How do I go about going to his bank to make it where I can have access to it as well. He says that all I have to do is bring the official papers. Is there anything else I should know?

First thing would be to call his bank and ask to speak to the Accounts Manager. Explain your situation. Many people are willing to help families of servicemen with exactly this problem. I would expect that you would need to bring the POA, your ID, and Social Security card at the very minimum. If you have any bills (like a utility bill, cable bill, mortgage statement, etc...) that shows both of your names on it, that might be helpful. They may want to see your marriage certificate.

However, the Power of Attorney should have your name on it, and that with your ID should suffice. Still, a phone call to the bank ahead of time will save you an extra trip back and forth.

Good luck and thank you for your family's sacrifice for our freedom.
