Be persistent and demand your money back. Ask the bank to provide evidence of where and when the card was used. If you can prove that you were in hospital, out of the country, anywhere else than where the card was used then the bank is going to have great difficulty in making you stand the loss.

It a pity the bank didn't suggest that you collect the card from a local branch and for the PIN number. What does concern me though is how the fraudster has managed to activate the card without knowing your password. Ask the bank to explain this and in writing.

Go to the banking ombudsman if they are difficult.

Ask your bank to do a check on where and when your card was used. Perhaps there may be video evidence that it was not you using the card. Or you could prove you were somewhere else on the day and time it was used. I wouldn't give up so easily when there are a few options left. Could you not report the theft to the police, so they could do these checks if your bank won't.

That's an difficult one. You didn't receive the card but didn't advise them so they didn't know it had gone astray and assume all was well. But on the other hand, cards normally have to be activated by a phone call and using a password so that's on their head. But on the other you didn't notice money disappearing from your account. But on the other hand, whoever nicked your card and pin shouldn't have been able to use them.

I'd fight it all the way.

In my opinion the card has been fraudulently used. The bank has some responsibility here. Take the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
